Welcome to this brand new series, where we are trying to find the best of Auckland's Iconic Eats for the list for 2026!
Just to be clear, this is a recurring series, meaning it will not be posted every 2 weeks, there will be new parts out roughly once each month. Also this will not rank every single Iconic Eat, just the ones that sounded the most interesting/delicious to us, but feel free to share your opinions in the comments!
So first off, what is an Iconic Eat? For the purpose of this series, we will be using the Auckland Iconic Eats 2026 list (click here!), which includes 100 dishes from eateries all over the region. All foods ranked in this series will be from this list, however to once again clarify, not every dish from this list will be ranked, just the ones the piqued our interest.
Each Iconic Eat will be ranked on 4 criteria. The first is Creativity, focusing on how unique the dish is. The second is pretty obvious, Taste, do we like it? Does it actually taste nice? The third criteria is Appearance, which will focus on how the dish is presented, and if it looks inviting to devour. The final criteria is Value for Money, where we will focus on how much bang you get for your buck. Now that that's out of the way, let's start ranking these Iconic Eats!
In Part 1, we are travelling to Riverhead, to rank the Turkish Eggs at Miss Riverhead Cafe.
Turkish Eggs (Miss Riverhead Cafe)
Dish Description from their menu - House made labneh, chili butter, poached eggs, green harra, sourdough, almond marjoram
Creativity (4/5) - While these Turkish Eggs are certainly not a new invention, they are not super common in Auckland, and are certainly unusual to find in a small town on the outskirts. Despite not being a new invention, Miss Riverhead's version are an excellent take, with creative flair, and something that it would be hard to find in many other areas.
Taste (5/5) - These Turkish Eggs were so delicious that we couldn't stop thinking about them for a little while, and they were at the front of our minds the whole time, despite also ordering the Strawberry Matcha French Toast (which was also very good, but not nearly as delicious as these). Even my dining companion who normally doesn't like eggs said she thoroughly enjoyed it. The non-egg components were also delicious, with a very, very nice flavour profile and varying textures, and we would 100% go back to eat these eggs, the trip out there is worth it!
Appearance (5/5) - The presentation was outstanding, with my companion commenting on how despite her previously mentioned dislike for eggs, they looked very appetising. The green harra on top of the eggs added a pop of colour, and the chili butter spooned on top added a nice warm colour tone. The toasted sourdough was also presented well, inviting us to dip right into the eggs.
Value for Money (5/5) - These Turkish Eggs were well worth the cost, coming in at only $24.90. The eggs were very filling, despite us splitting it in half between us, and we would have been willing to pay much more for such a delicious and spectacularly presented dish.
Overall (19/20) - Miss Riverhead Cafe have outdone themselves with this dish, getting an almost perfect score. These eggs were filling, delicious, amazing to look at, and a great bang for your buck. The bar has been set very high for this series, and we hope to see these eggs high up the rankings when all is done!
While this ranking is focused on the dish, I would also like to mention that the staff were very welcoming, and the service was quick and efficient. They also had a large variety on their menu, including the Strawberry Matcha French Toast mentioned earlier, and a Biscoff Hot Chocolate which we also tried. All in all, these eggs are certainly worthy of the trip out to Riverhead, and definitely deserve their spot on the Auckland Iconic Eats List 2026!
A reminder that this is a recurring series, meaning this series will be posted roughly once each month, while other series are also being ranked and published.
Thanks for reading and the next series will be out next Monday (15th June), where I attempt to rank all the Tūpuna Maunga of Auckland!
